As influencers, we want to share our lives with our viewers. It can be hard to find that balance between what you should share and what you should keep private, especially if you are filming your daily life. Something to remember is that once you put something online, it is out there forever so you need to think about what you are putting out there before you do it. Don’t give others anything that they can use against you. At the end of the day, keeping certain things private is about keeping you and your family safe both physically and mentally. It can also make you feel more confident knowing that you haven’t shared everything about you with the world. I have put together a few things that I believe should be kept private.
Personal Information: It is so important to keep your personal information to yourself. After all it is personal isn’t it? This includes things such as information as to where you live, whether it is the city you live in, the area, the neighbourhood etc. You don’t want to make it easy for people to know where to find you. This can cause all kinds of issues from people showing up at your house unexpectedly, to people stalking you.
Family Issues: I know you might feel it is okay to share some things such as small arguments on a video or issues going on in your family, but that really is something to keep private. Issues within your family are for you and your family only; the rest of the world does not need to tune in to what’s going on.
Finances: This is an incredibly important thing to keep private. Other people do not need to know your salary or how much you make. Sharing this information with others, especially family members, can sometimes get you into sticky situations. People tend to look at you differently if they know how much money you make, and may think they can use you for your money or get things out of you. This could be anything from free meals to you being the one everyone calls to bail them out. Of course, not everyone is like this but there are people like this out there.
Materialistic Items: It is completely okay to own luxury items! Showing off only the expensive things that you own though can come off wrong to other people. What I like to do is share outfits that I have styled that include both high end and low end brands. I love mixing high end brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, etc with adorable brands such as Target. Sharing things that are relatable for your viewers can be incredibly beneficial for your brand.
Acts of Kindness: Doing things out of the kindness of your heart is one thing, but only doing it so that you can show it off is another. Doing random acts of kindness is an amazing thing to do, but you should do it for yourself and not for the praise from others. If you are only doing things to film it, you can give off the wrong message.
You want to make sure to be your authentic self, without sharing too much information with the online world. Keeping these things private not only keeps you and your family safe, but it also gives you a sense of normality. Before you post on Instagram, YouTube, etc make sure to check that things such as your house address, license plates, or any paperwork is not visible. Sometimes we don’t think about what is in the background of our photos, but it could cause potential issues for you depending on who sees it. To sum it all up, there are just some things that you are meant to keep to yourself.
